Taking part in a study

This page is for people who take part in studies on User Evaluation. If you run studies, see What participants see.

Get invited

There are two ways in:

  • A link from a company. A company you use sends you a link to its study. Open it and follow the steps.
  • Invitations from our panel. Create a free participant account at app.userevaluation.com/signup and fill in your profile. Studies that fit your profile appear under Invitations in your account, each with its pay shown up front. Take the ones you like; skipping has no penalty.

Fill in your profile from LinkedIn

You can fill most of your profile from LinkedIn instead of typing it. LinkedIn doesn't share profiles with other sites, so you upload the PDF LinkedIn makes of yours:

  1. On LinkedIn, open your own profile, click More (or Resources), then Save to PDF.
  2. In your participant account, open Profile and click Import from LinkedIn. Choose the PDF (up to 5 MB).
  3. Check what we read: headline, location, about, jobs, schools, skills, languages and industry. Untick anything you don't want, then click Save to profile.

Nothing changes until you save. New jobs, schools, skills and languages are added; nothing already on your profile is removed, and you can edit any field afterwards. We read the file to fill in your profile and don't keep it. Each account has three imports, and only saving uses one: cancelling the check, or a file we can't read, doesn't. You can upload up to ten PDFs a day.

Before the interview

  1. Read What happens on the study page and agree to the recording.
  2. Answer a few short screener questions. If you're a match you carry straight on. If it isn't a match this time, you can try again after 24 hours.
  3. Check your microphone: say a few words and wait for Sounds good.
  4. If the study is by video, the room asks you to Turn on camera and Share a window before you start. You pick which window, tab or screen to share, and you see your own camera in a corner. The interviewer only hears you; the camera and what you share are recorded for the research team.

Use a quiet place, a laptop or phone with a microphone, and an up-to-date browser. Nothing to install. Phones can't share a screen: on a phone you take part by voice (and camera, if you like), unless the study needs both, in which case it asks you to open the link on a laptop or desktop.

In the interview

  • An AI interviewer asks questions out loud and you answer out loud, in your own words. There are no right answers.
  • You can type an answer instead, and turn on Captions.
  • Say "skip", or press Skip, for any question you'd rather not answer.
  • Some studies show you an image, a web page or a prototype at a certain question, or ask a quick rating question on screen.
  • In a video study, a red chip shows while you're sharing. Press Stop sharing (or your browser's own stop button) any time, and Share a window to start again. Turn your camera off from its corner.
  • Most interviews take 15 to 30 minutes.

When you've answered at least half the questions you can press Done. You can stop at any time with End, but an interview stopped early isn't paid.

For a live interview with a researcher, you book a time instead and join the call from your browser. You can join up to 10 minutes early, and reschedule or cancel up to 2 hours before.

You agree to being recorded before an interview starts: the call, plus your camera and the window you share when the study is by video. Nothing is recorded before you press start or after the interview ends, and you can withdraw at any time. Read the participant consent notice. Researchers never see your payout details.
